Serenity from the city was the main objective in creating this unique home in Jakarta, Indonesia, designed by Eben Architects. The 550 square metre home is an open and relaxing environment, which combines with two courtyards to establish a tranquil connect with nature. These flowing living spaces give the homeowner an enriching contrast between life at home and their intense work life in the noisy, dense capital region. Slatted timber screens protectively encase the exterior of the house to provide shade and light play inside, plus privacy from the street. At night, the timber screened home becomes a mysterious lantern in contemporary linear form.
Great white sails divide the second story of the modern exterior, providing seclusion from the immediate neighbours and shielding from the street.
Wood slatted volumes filter the sun during hot daylight hours, then stack enchanting lanterns by nightfall.
The series of wooden screens build privacy across the home, allowing the homeowner to freely open windows without the wandering eye of the public gaining views directly inside.
A front courtyard brings lush greenery to the facade, which spills through black coated metal fences onto the street. This first courtyard serves as a unique transition between the busy road and the home interior–an outdoor foyer in which to greet guests. It is also where the homeowner spends time in appreciation of his beloved koi fish.
Garden uplights enchant the courtyard’s foliage, growing a welcoming evening glow.
The fine bars of the black perimeter become interlinked with the building’s towering wood slats, and merge in one vertical stretch toward the sky.
The living room of the house is laid peacefully between the front koi courtyard and a central pool courtyard with a vertical garden, making a green enveloped heart of the home. The room can be opened wide on both sides, linking all three areas as one huge outdoor space.
A magnificent chandelier spreads sparkle over the spectacular living room, in crisp and clear contrast to natural wooden walls. See more decor inspiration for luxurious double height living rooms here.
The wood slatted nature of the exterior is brought across interior expanses to fulfill a restful and seamless cohesion.
Even the floor and furniture seemed patterned with the slats striped aesthetic, as sunlight slices through the gaps. Round nesting coffee tables lead like stepping stones toward the pool patio.
The rectangular pool design links the living room to the dining room, which causes it to become a central family gathering spot for relaxation and exercise.
Drinks are easily grabbed from the dining room’s bar to enjoy by the water’s edge throughout the day and evening.
The home’s bedrooms look down upon the swimming pool and vertical garden area, and benefit from the tranquil watery soundtrack.
The master bedroom is situated to the front of the house, and so benefits from views of the koi pond courtyard.
A complete wall of glass doors are retracted to fully adjoin the dining room with the pool terrace, creating an outdoor eating experience. A handsome live edge dining table for six is lit brightly by a stunning linear chandelier. Find more beautiful ideas for dining room pendant lights here.
Even the hallway of the home opens up to the central courtyard, giving access to the bedrooms directly from the poolside.
nest under a floating staircase design, bringing a little of the garden inside. LED light trickles down a rich wood planked feature wall, which adds extra height to the space.
A living room walkway overhangs the fishpond.
A classical statue and water fountain bring character and life to the outdoor reception space.
The relaxing sound of rushing, bubbling water from the courtyard overlays the street noise. Privacy is ensured by a series of screens.
The slatted build technique has also been manipulated to form a plethora of interior shelving.
Upstairs, the landing is a calm and solid sided transition space. Just a short undermount of wooden railings hark to the slatted aesthetic.
Wooden shutters dramatise the sun rays in the master bedroom.
accents meld with the natural theme of the house at large and its grounds. Decoration in the master suite is kept simple and minimal, allowing this to be a place of rest and rejuvenation.
A small TV stand skims the wall at the same height as a built in window seat, building one smooth continuous line.
A diving screen sections off a neat area for the vanity table. The floating dressing table and vanity chair dip low behind a solid section of the dividing wall, and are obscured by deep side sections to maintain the rooms streamlined simplicity.
Inside the master bathroom, seamless clean white stone clads the walls, shower wet zone and a bathroom vanity shelf. A designer table lamp adds a luxe gold moment to the countertop, in contrast to shiny chrome basin and shower fittings.
Wooden volumes hold secret the luxurious nature of the homeowner’s everyday retreat.

The upper floor plan illustrates the full extent of the master suite’s generously sized layout, which includes a huge walk-in wardrobe just opposite the ensuite bathroom.
